The 29 october has been a great day for many americans film buffs. The last movie of the japanese master of animation Hayao Miyazaki has been released. Mononoke Hime (Princess Mononoke) has been very well considered in the press:
"One of the most wondrous film I have ever hope to see (...) One of the year's best films" - Roger Ebert (Chicago Sun-Times)
"A work of extravagent beauty (...) just sit back and behold!" - Peter Travers (Rolling Stone).
Those who have seen some movies from Ghibli's studio like The Crimson pig (Porco Rosso), My Neighbour Totoro and even the wonderful Grave of the fireflies would notice the studio made some animation movies at the graphic level, from the screenplay, the choice of the theme and the way to deal with them, etc...
Well, Princess Mononoke is even better...

Last news:
the movie has been released in States: the october 29th (with the voices of: Gillian Anderson (X-files), Claire Danes (Roméo+Juliette), Billie Crupud, ...). The best performance at the american box-office has been 26th. From the ghibli's side we were hoping to reach the top 20; there was a media campaign relatively important, a quite warm welcome in the press. However it's all the same an extraordinary succes for a foreigner movie in States...
The Ghibli's next movie has just been announced by Miyazaki himself for the summer 2001. The title (certainly temporary) is : "Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi" (A Thousand and Chihiro's Spirited Away)". |
